The yen strengthened in the foreign exchange market, rising to the 152-yen range against the dollar at one point. As the outlook for the Japan-U.S. interest rate differential shifted, Minister of Finance Katayama Satsuki (片山さつき) again cautioned against speculative movements.
Buying of the yen dominated the foreign exchange market, with the yen reaching the 152-yen range against the dollar at one point, its strongest level in about six months. Reports indicated that the yen had strengthened by approximately ¥7 since the start of this week.
One factor cited by the market was that, while expectations for rate hikes by the U.S. central bank, the FRB, had eased somewhat, growing expectations of accelerated rate hikes by the Bank of Japan had raised concerns about a narrowing Japan-U.S. interest rate differential.
Against this backdrop, Minister of Finance Katayama Satsuki (片山さつき) said at a press conference today that the government would work to maintain orderly foreign exchange markets, again cautioning against speculative movements.
Market participants are closely watching the Japan-U.S. interest rate differential, market liquidity trends and the possibility of coordinated intervention by the government and the Bank of Japan as factors affecting future developments.
