Toyota’s popular compact SUV, the Yaris Cross, is increasingly likely to receive a major facelift in 2027, with the key question being whether the new design unveiled in the European market will be rolled out for the Japanese-spec model. Plans for substantial design changes based on the current model, along with consideration of a higher-output hybrid powertrain, are revealing the steps toward the next generation.
The Yaris Cross is reportedly likely to receive a major facelift in 2027, involving substantial design changes rather than a full model change. Ahead of this, an updated model for the European market was unveiled in 2026, adopting a design that gives it a different impression from the previous model, including a redesigned front fascia. Similar changes may also be introduced on the Japanese-spec model.
The current model, based on the GA-B platform, has been on the market for 6 years, making whether the new European design will be rolled out in the Japanese market a key point of interest. Elements of the European specification, such as the GR SPORT’s exclusive design and 18-inch aluminum wheels, may also be extended to the Japanese-spec model.
In terms of powertrains, Europe offers the higher-output Hybrid 130, but there has been no official announcement at this stage on whether it will be introduced in Japan. Interior enhancements and updates to safety features around the same time as the major facelift are also expected to be areas of focus.
However, factors could emerge that lead to the full model change being postponed, making a scenario in which the transition to the next-generation Yaris Cross is pushed back to 2028 or later after the 2027 refresh increasingly realistic. Whether the Europe-first new face will also make its way to Japan will be the focus going forward.
