Denka’s acquisition of a specialist diagnostics company is expected to accelerate restructuring in Japan’s diagnostics market. As the push for streamlining gains momentum against a backdrop of population decline, more than 100 diagnostics manufacturers are competing in the domestic market.
Denka acquired a specialist diagnostics company in March and called for restructuring in the diagnostics sector. Many companies operate in the diagnostics market in Japan, intensifying competition. With major overseas companies also stepping up their offensive, the view has emerged that restructuring, including expansion in scale, is unavoidable for companies to survive.
Diagnostic tests react with patient specimens such as blood and urine to identify the type of infectious disease or whether cancer is present, and are said to influence treatment decisions such as the choice of medication and whether to perform surgery. Progress in restructuring the domestic market could lead to a review of business structures.
As major European and US companies lead the market, the integration and expansion of domestic companies are expected to be key issues going forward. Restructuring in the diagnostics business is expected to advance with the aim of securing competitiveness among companies and strengthening their financial foundations.
