The company has announced the supply of Japan's first polyethylene recycled fishing nets for purse seine fisheries to the Dai-san Fuji Maru. The product, known as R&B recycled polyethylene net, is supplied using collected and recycled discarded fishing nets.
NICHIMO CO.,LTD. has collected discarded fishing nets no longer needed by fishermen and supplied nets recycled through horizontal recycling as polyethylene fishing nets for use in purse seine fisheries. The recipient is the Dai-san Fuji Maru, operated by Taiyo A&F Co., Ltd.
R&B recycled polyethylene net is made by sorting and washing discarded fishing nets, heating and forming them into pellets, and incorporating them into recycled fishing nets through spinning and yarn manufacturing. The recycled content is expected to be approximately 10%.
Although the nets had previously been used in aquaculture cages, there had been no record of their use in purse seine fisheries. This supply is positioned as an initiative to improve the sustainability of seafood supplies in Japan and overseas.
Going forward, the company plans to continue technology development while assessing the nets' performance in the field and expand the supply of environmentally responsible materials.
