KODEX200, an ETF tracking South Korea's KOSPI 200, achieved an asset return of more than 80% this year. It significantly outperformed deposit yields and also outperformed gold and Bitcoin.
According to an asset return report released by Daishin Securities, KODEX200, which tracks the KOSPI 200 Index, rose from KRW60,460 on 2 January to KRW109,285 on 20 September, bringing its cumulative return to 80.76%. Despite sharp market volatility in July, it maintained the top cumulative year-to-date performance among major asset classes.
Assuming an average annual base interest rate of 2.77% on time deposits, the return over the 262 days from 1 January through 20 September was approximately 1.99% on a daily accrual basis. KODEX200's return was therefore equivalent to approximately 40.6 times that figure. These figures are before management fees and tax deductions.
Among major asset classes, WTI New York crude oil futures followed with a return of +67.36%, while South Korean domestic active equity funds returned +58.07%. The SPY ETF returned only +11.08%, while South Korea's domestic gold retail price fell 2.60%, Bitcoin fell 10.18%, and the Korean Credit Evaluation Bond Composite Index fell 3.77%.
In the foreign exchange market, the won weakened. The dollar fell from KRW1,466.70 to KRW1,380.30, while the won/yen rate fell from KRW922.70 to KRW884.33 per ¥100. The projected KOSPI range for the fourth quarter was given as 6,000–9,300 points.
