B Corp Asia Summit 2026 was held in Kuala Lumpur, where the practices of 4 Japanese companies highlighted the view that purpose works not by establishing the company’s independence, but by building relationships of “interdependence.” Each company explained concretely how it incorporates purpose into its day-to-day management.
As purpose-setting by Japanese companies continues to spread, B Corp Asia Summit 2026 offered “interdependence” as a perspective on the question of whether efforts to embed purpose in day-to-day decision-making remain insufficient. The summit positioned the key to making purpose work not as the company’s independence alone, but as how it designs its relationships with employees, shareholders, customers and society.
The 4 companies from Japan that took the stage, クラダシ, バリューブックス, Patagonia and UPDATER, introduced different approaches to translating purpose into the disciplines, dialogue, structures and relationships of everyday management. クラダシ embeds purpose thoroughly in hiring and everyday meetings, while バリューブックス has protected employment through dialogue and advanced warehouse automation.
Patagonia has embedded purpose in its ownership structure itself, linking the company’s capital structure to the Earth’s long-term interests. UPDATER does not use an explicit statement of purpose, but makes meaning a competitive advantage by providing electricity with a human face and positioning its customers as “patrons.”
All 4 companies’ initiatives function as designs that go beyond leaving purpose as fine words and ask whom the company supports and from whom it receives support. The summit’s speakers viewed creating an economic system premised on interdependence as a challenge for the future.
