Tokyo stocks rebounded by the morning close. While concerns persisted over higher crude oil prices stemming from Middle East risks, the market was supported by the continued strength of US semiconductor stocks.
Tokyo stocks initially opened lower on the 9th, but buying subsequently prevailed. By the morning close, the Nikkei Stock Average was up ¥225.90 from the previous day at ¥65,495.23. Estimated morning-session trading volume was approximately 1,010.84 million shares, with trading value of approximately ¥4.4827 trillion. Advancing issues outnumbered declining issues, and market sentiment remained firm overall despite a lack of clear direction among individual stocks.
Concerns over Middle East risks remain amid lingering expectations that soaring crude oil prices will weigh on the market. At the same time, Tokyo stocks followed the previous day's gains in US semiconductor-related stocks, with some semiconductor issues bought in Tokyo and supporting the broader market. While many individual stocks rose, some also declined, leaving trading mixed across the Prime Market overall.
Moves driven by individual catalysts stood out, while attention also focused on major stocks. SoftBank Group extended its gains, while Fujikura and Furukawa Electric were also bought. Lasertec and Ibiden rose as well. Nonferrous metal stocks Mitsui Mining & Smelting and Sumitomo Metal Mining surged. Nippon Denpa Kogyo and Nippon Chemi-Con jumped, and Toyo Engineering also advanced, while Advantest and Nintendo remained soft.
