Obayashi has begun land-based farming of Manila clams in Kumamoto Prefecture and aims to establish the technology in cooperation with the Kumamoto Northern Fisheries Cooperative Association.
The company is conducting a demonstration to significantly reduce feed costs by using a nitrogen-rich liquid produced as a byproduct at Ajinomoto's factories to cultivate diatoms, which serve as feed for fish and shellfish.
The farming operation, which began this summer in Nagasu Town on the coast of the Ariake Sea, is intended to establish the technology by fiscal 2028 and expand it to other regions and species.
