The Tokyo stock market saw broad-based buying during the morning session as the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) delivered an outcome in line with market expectations, bringing relief that the event had passed. The Nikkei rose at the open, although caution toward AI-related stocks remained.
The Nikkei 225 stood at ¥63,966.87 at the midday close, up ¥43.87 from the previous day, while the TOPIX was up 29.34 points at 4,091.06, with both indices largely erasing their earlier gains. After rising more than ¥700 at the open, the market remained weighed down by persistent concerns over a slowdown in AI development, with related stocks weak.
Approximately 80% of all stocks rose, while 16% fell. Trading volume was 915.10 million shares, and trading value was ¥3.6036 trillion. By sector, Other Products, Pharmaceuticals and Insurance rose, while Mining, Oil and Coal Products, and Nonferrous Metals fell.
As of 10:14 a.m., the Nikkei had narrowed its gain after opening ¥720 higher than the previous day. AI-related and semiconductor stocks continued to face selling pressure at higher levels. Meanwhile, 80% of Prime Market stocks were higher, and major brokerages said that the FOMC's rate decision had been in line with expectations, with relief that the event had passed prompting buying.
At the open, the Nikkei 225 began at ¥64,643.58, up ¥720.58 from the previous day. With the yen moving weaker, buying led across a broad range of stocks, and the market as a whole ended the morning session higher.
