Nikkei 225 futures plunged to ¥63,630 in the Osaka Exchange night session, while the cash-market close fell sharply from the previous day. The decline has reportedly been driven by outflows from AI and semiconductor-related stocks, rising U.S. interest rates and inflation concerns, with attention focused on what happens next.
The Nikkei 225 futures close on the 16th was ¥65,520. After the night session began, futures fell to ¥64,490 amid turmoil in the US market. The closing auction at 6:00 a.m. settled at ¥63,630, approximately ¥1,694 below the cash-market close of ¥65,324.29. The move was reportedly driven mainly by outflows from AI- and semiconductor-related stocks rather than a broad-based breakdown in the equity market.
In the US market, the Nasdaq plunged, with credit concerns surrounding AI infrastructure stocks such as CoreWeave driving the decline. In addition, the US 10-year Treasury yield rose into the 5% range, and reports said that inflation concerns, together with this, heightened awareness of excessive equity valuations. Interest-rate trends and higher crude oil prices were also cited as contributing factors.
As consolidation continues around ¥63,000 as a psychological level, the 25-day and 75-day moving averages are nearly converging and a death cross is approaching. The divergence rate has not reached an oversold level, and the 200-day moving average is attracting attention as long-term downside support. The relationship between the 75-day and 25-day moving averages and the difficulty of a rebound after a death cross are key market focuses.
