Regarding the development of dry storage facilities for the temporary storage of spent nuclear fuel at nuclear power stations in Fukui Prefecture, the Kansai Electric Power Company announced plans to install facilities at the sites of Mihama and Takahama nuclear power stations and began site preparation work.
The facilities are intended to replace the pool-based cooling and storage method used at nuclear power stations, with plans to adopt air-cooled dry storage, which is considered safer. Construction is proceeding after the Nuclear Regulation Authority’s safety review and with the consent of the prefecture and the municipalities hosting the plants.
Construction, including site preparation, began on the 1st, with operations targeted to begin sequentially from 2029 onward. Kansai Electric Power has also indicated plans to install similar facilities at all nuclear power station sites in Fukui Prefecture in the future.
