Sony Semiconductor Solutions, the semiconductor subsidiary of Sony Group, and TSMC signed a definitive agreement on 11 August to establish a joint venture for next-generation image sensors. The new company will be named Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, based in Kōshi, Kumamoto Prefecture, and aims to begin mass production in 2029. Total investment will be approximately ¥747 billion, with Sony holding a 62% stake and TSMC 38%.
The investment will comprise approximately ¥465 billion from Sony and approximately ¥282 billion from TSMC. The companies plan to provide funding in stages, depending on demand and the business environment. Additional investment in production capacity is contingent on support from the Japanese government. Under the division of responsibilities, Sony will provide core technology development and product design, while TSMC will provide advanced process technology and manufacturing expertise.
The joint venture follows the definitive agreement reached on the basis of the memorandum of understanding signed in May this year. It will be led by Sony, including through Sony’s selection of the representative director. By commencing mass production at the new plant, the companies aim to accelerate the commercialization of next-generation image sensors tailored to customer needs.
