Norfolk Southern and Schneider National have agreed to a partnership aimed at expanding domestic intermodal transportation capacity across the eastern United States. The transition is scheduled to begin next month, with formal implementation targeted for 1 January 2027.
Norfolk Southern and Schneider National have reportedly agreed to a partnership to expand domestic intermodal transportation capacity across the eastern United States. The transition will begin next month, and a dedicated transition team comprising personnel from both companies has been established.
Schneider CEO Jim Filter said that expanded access to Norfolk Southern’s eastern network would expand Schneider’s logistics network and support efforts to shift freight from trucks to intermodal transportation. CSX has remained the company’s primary rail provider since 2008.
The transition is expected to broaden access to major markets, increase network flexibility and create opportunities to provide better service to customers. Norfolk Southern’s operations are based on investment in an intermodal network spanning 22 states, including Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina and Illinois.
The partnership comes as Norfolk Southern advances its merger with Union Pacific and is expected to create further opportunities through new single-line services and improved connectivity.
Schneider has more than 60 intermodal rail hubs in North America and manages 23,900 chassis and 26,800 containers.
