Shye, a 24-year-old singer-songwriter based in Singapore, discusses her growth as a bedroom-made shoegaze artist, her latest release and her first performances in Japan, in Tokyo.
Singapore-based Shye handles everything from songwriting and composition to mixing, mastering and production on a DIY basis. Her production style uses her bedroom as a laboratory, and, influenced by artists such as Clairo and Billie Eilish, whom she admired as a teenager, she has attracted the attention of listeners in Singapore and abroad.
In 2018, she won the grand prize in a Vans-sponsored competition, becoming the youngest winner in the competition's history. In 2020, she released her debut album *days to morning glory*. Since then, she has performed at festivals and major venues across Southeast Asia, served as a support act for concerts in Singapore and collaborated with brands.
Her latest album, *The Doves Came Home*, was released in May this year and is characterized by heavy elements that respond to the shoegaze revival. She is scheduled to give her first performances in Japan, in Tokyo on 12 and 13 October. Her multicultural background, which transcends genres and eras, also influences her songwriting.
