With full-scale commercialization in view, this feature highlights 6 companies attracting attention in next-generation batteries. It covers developments moving toward practical applications and mass production, including Panasonic Energy’s development of an all-solid-state battery capable of operating at high temperatures.
Six stocks were selected based on the view that next-generation batteries are moving toward commercialization in applications beyond industrial equipment and automobiles. The expansion of applications and progress toward mass production, centered on all-solid-state batteries, are highlighted as key areas of interest.
Panasonic Energy has developed an all-solid-state battery that can be used in high-temperature environments of up to 150°C and announced it at an exhibition in September. Both coin-shaped and prismatic versions are available, with sample shipments planned for October–December and mass production targeted within approximately 1–2 years. Applications in factory equipment, industrial machinery and the medical field are envisaged beyond EVs.
Global developments include Taiwan’s ProLogium Technology moving its high-energy-density all-solid-state batteries into the mass-production phase, and China-based BYD indicating plans for commercialization from 2027 onward. The article presents the view that collaboration and cooperation among Japanese companies will support the commercialization of all-solid-state batteries.
In battery materials and manufacturing equipment, Maxell, TDK, Murata Manufacturing and solid-electrolyte-related companies in Nara are pursuing mass production for ultra-small to medium-sized devices and developing materials. The main point raised is that technological development of solid electrolytes and ceramic separators will be key to moving into the mass-production phase.
