Mirae Asset Securities and Toss Securities are considering acquiring an existing securities company, rather than establishing a new one, as a means of entering the Japanese market. Through the acquisition, they aim to secure local licenses and sales networks in an integrated manner and launch operations quickly.
The companies are considering 3–4 potential acquisition targets in the Japanese market and are selecting a suitable partner based on business viability, the acquisition price and post-acquisition synergies.
The backdrop includes expectations for growth in Japan’s capital markets and growing interest from global investors, as well as the view that individual investors’ money is increasingly flowing into the capital markets.
Mirae Asset Securities’ strengths lie in wealth management and ETFs, while Toss Securities is competitive with its mobile-focused investment platform. Proposals are being considered to apply both companies’ areas of expertise to their Japanese operations.
In addition to Japan, Mirae Asset Securities is pursuing the acquisition of a U.S. online brokerage and has set expanding its global investment platform as a long-term objective.
