Bitget will acquire the Thai-based exchange owned by GMO Internet Group and obtain its local licence, creating a foothold for offering its own platform in the Thai market. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval.
Bitget announced that it had agreed to acquire GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics (Thailand). The acquisition is intended to expand the provision of its trading platform in Thailand by acquiring an operator with a local licence.
The transaction involves the transfer, through BTGT Management, of all shares held by GMO Internet Group and its Thai subsidiary. Completion of the transfer is scheduled for 31 October 2026.
The deal is positioned as part of a strategy to strengthen Bitget’s local business by acquiring a licensed operator in Thailand, as the Thai government tightens cryptocurrency regulations.
Bitget CEO Gracy Chen said that understanding the local regulatory environment and maintaining a long-term commitment were important. She explained that, following completion of the acquisition, the company aims to offer its own platform in compliance with Thai regulations.
Bitget ended its services for residents of Japan in August and disclosed losses of approximately ¥61 billion from an unauthorised outflow in September. The deal is viewed as one example of market entry accompanied by the acquisition of a local licence.
