Hirooka Terrace, developed by Mitsubishi Jisho Design in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, was completed as a co-creation space incorporating semi-outdoor areas that redefine the boundary between interior and exterior, in collaboration with the head office of The Hokkoku Bank.
A new office building, Hirooka Terrace, was completed on a site facing Keyaki Boulevard on the west side of Kanazawa Station, in collaboration with the existing head office of The Hokkoku Bank. The project, which reconsiders the nature and appearance of boundaries, was realized despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Noto Peninsula Earthquake and torrential rains.
Moving beyond the conventional configuration of large private areas and small common areas, the design seeks to create a place where people gather and collaborate in generous common areas. Light partitions blur the boundaries between interior, exterior and semi-outdoor spaces, connecting them loosely. The design incorporates the fragrance and scenery of Noto hiba cypress and cedar, with spaces through which light and air can pass.
The head office was completed in 2014 and designed as a space open to the city. Hirooka Terrace also drew inspiration from the head office's fully open operation of its natural-ventilation windows, connecting the two buildings with a large roof and a bridge and enabling them to share common functions. The cafeteria, hall and other facilities were made available to users of both buildings through partial renovation of existing spaces in the head office, transforming the complex into a place for interaction across generations and occupations within the area.
