Japan’s finance minister and BOJ governor will attend next week’s G20 Meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors. Policy discussions on correcting yen weakness are expected to intensify again.
Japan’s Finance Minister Katayama Satsuki (片山皐月) and BOJ Governor Ueda Kazuo (植田和男) are scheduled to attend next week’s G20 Meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors in the United States, where discussions are expected to focus on the global economy.
The meeting is expected to address the spillover effects of the war in the Middle East and its impact on the global economy, developments concerning new sanctions on Iran, and the challenge of global imbalances.
Minister Katayama has expressed her intention to contribute to discussions on the global economy, while the possibility has been raised that her meeting with Governor Ueda could provide an opportunity for policy discussions, including measures to address yen weakness.
The yen has rebounded from last month’s low near ¥164, but uncertainty in the market remains elevated, and attention is focused on the impact of possible joint intervention by Japan and the United States.
