The Nikkei Average opened at ¥66994.05, up ¥23.83 from the previous day, with buying slightly leading across the market against the backdrop of the previous day's developments in US stock markets.
Although the US stock market was affected by the previous day's decline in the Dow, a rebound in the SOX Index supported semiconductor-related stocks, while activity in stocks ahead of earnings announcements also provided downside support for share prices.
By sector, oil and coal products, mining, banks, services and foods were among the top gainers, while non-ferrous metals, pharmaceuticals and electrical equipment were among the leading decliners.
Among the TSE Prime stocks with the highest trading value, Yokohama Rubber, DIC, Ajinomoto and Mitsubishi Materials were advancing, while ASICS, Rakuten Group, Fujikura and Furukawa Electric were declining.
