The Istanbul Prosecutor's Office requested authorisation from the Ministry of Treasury and Finance to investigate former SPK Chairman İbrahim Ömer Gönül on suspicion of abuse of office. The Ministry of Treasury and Finance decided to deploy the Teftiş Kurulu for a review and investigation.
On the 30th, the Istanbul Cumhuriyet Başsavcılığı Terörizmin Finansmanı ve Aklama Suçu Soruşturma Bürosu submitted a letter to the Ministry of Treasury and Finance requesting authorisation to investigate former SPK Chairman İbrahim Ömer Gönül. In response, Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek instructed the Teftiş Kurulu to conduct a preliminary review and investigation of the matter.
The investigation concerns suspected stock-market manipulation and is expected to examine coordination and synchronized activity between funds and stocks across individual securities listed on Borsa İstanbul and funds traded through TEFAS. Possible offences include organized crime, fraud using the market and money laundering.
The case also highlights the importance of the SPK's responsibility for supervising and inspecting investment funds, noting that investor protection and the legality of transactions should be monitored at multiple levels.
The report, based on fund-related case reports prepared by the SPK between September 2024 and September 2026, indicates that cases involving multiple funds are the focus of the investigation. It also records the presence of investors claiming to have suffered losses.
