Finance Minister Katayama Satsuki (片山さつき) said Scott Bessent’s reference to the “house” has an unsettling ring in Japanese, while explaining that the policy of coordinated intervention by Japan and the United States remains unchanged even as the yen trades around ¥153 to the dollar. She also announced the issuance of commemorative silver coins for the 2027 International Horticultural Expo.
At a press conference, Finance Minister Katayama Satsuki (片山さつき) was asked about US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s reference to the “house” in connection with the yen and intervention. She said the expression has a “frightening” ring in Japanese, but would not go so far as to assess the substance of his remarks. Regarding the interpretation of the English original, she referred to an explanation by The Wall Street Journal.
On the rapid appreciation of the yen, she avoided commenting on specific market movements, but stressed that the policy response had not changed at all since Japan and the United States conducted coordinated intervention and issued a statement. At the same time, she reflected that exchanges of views with officials after the Japan-US finance ministers’ meeting were “creating a good flow.”
She also announced the issuance of ¥1,000 commemorative silver coins marking the International Horticultural Expo 2027, saying that applications would open around December, the price would be ¥33,500, and the mintage would be 40,000.
(Supplement) International attention will focus on developments in future coverage concerning interpretations of Secretary Bessent’s remarks and their impact on the markets.
