US-based GlobalFoundries (GF) plans to build a new semiconductor fab in Malta, New York, capable of processing 300 mm wafers, with operations targeted to begin in 2029. The Japanese government plans to provide up to $21 billion in support, and the possibility of building a second fab in the future is also being considered.
GF announced plans to build a new semiconductor fab capable of processing 300 mm wafers in Malta, New York. The new fab is expected to produce semiconductors for automobiles, industrial equipment, and communications infrastructure, and is positioned as the third phase of a US-Japan government investment package for the United States.
The initial investment will be approximately $10 billion to build the first fab at the Malta site, with construction to begin in 2026 and operations targeted for 2029. Production capacity is expected to be approximately 900,000 wafers per year on a 300 mm basis. A second fab is also planned, with an additional investment of approximately $10 billion in the future.
GF will be responsible for operations and technology provision, while expanding collaboration with Japanese companies Tokyo Electron and Renesas Electronics. The Japanese government is considering providing funding to stabilize the US-Japan semiconductor supply chain.
