This report conveys impressions from a city test drive of the new Subaru Levorg Layback Premium S_HEV EX. The model is presented as a vehicle that retains mechanical AWD and combines long-distance driving capability with a refined interior.
The new Layback Premium S_HEV EX retains mechanical AWD, with the front and rear wheels connected by a propeller shaft. It features front-to-rear torque distribution according to road conditions and X-MODE, delivering genuine off-road capability despite its urban styling. Coordination between the regenerative and hydraulic brakes is natural, with no unpleasant sensation when pressing the pedal or grabby braking.
Fuel economy was recorded at 19.0 km/L in WLTC testing, while real-world fuel economy on suburban roads and expressways is relatively strong. The vehicle also retains its large 63-liter tank. In practical terms, it is expected to travel around 950 km on a full tank, and more than 1,000 km depending on conditions. Its long-distance driving capability in combination with EyeSight X is emphasized. The interior is also characterized by good visibility and the ease of operation provided by a large portrait-oriented display, with a tan-and-black interior listed as standard equipment.
At the same time, some have pointed to a lack of cohesion in the interior design, with the combination of luxury materials and sporty components becoming a point of discussion. The omission of the rear-seat reclining mechanism because of the battery pack is cited as a drawback for family use. Cargo capacity totals 429 L, comprising 410 L above the floor and 19 L below it, with a floor length of more than 1,000 mm.
