Apple announced the M6 for Mac mini and the M5 Ultra for Mac Studio. The chips feature designs aimed at significantly improving AI processing and performance, including a 2-nanometer process and a Quad-die configuration.
Apple today announced the M6 and M5 Ultra, new chips designed to deliver major gains in performance and AI processing, and unveiled new Mac mini and Mac Studio models equipped with them. The M6 uses a 2-nanometer process and enhances its CPU and GPU configurations to deliver higher performance.
The M6 features a newly designed 12-core CPU complex, a 12-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine, with unified memory bandwidth of up to 170GB/s. Apple says it delivers improved processing performance and energy efficiency for on-device AI workloads.
The M5 Ultra uses UltraFusion technology to connect two dies and features up to a 36-core CPU and an 80-core GPU. With unified memory bandwidth of up to 1.2TB/s and memory capacity of up to 512GB, it is designed to support AI and high-performance workflows on desktop systems.
For developers, Apple added that tools including Core AI, Core ML, Metal and Xcode use the new chips' hardware to enable large AI models to be run and fine-tuned on-device.
