Twenty-two major Japanese companies have announced their participation in the NVIDIA-backed Cosmos Coalition, an organization promoting physical AI. The announcement covering its Japan-based participants included Fujitsu, Hitachi, Ltd., Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsui & Co., signaling a drive toward real-world deployment through the development of shared technology infrastructure and the use of field data.
The Cosmos Coalition has expanded into Japan, with 22 companies and organizations announcing their intention to participate. Participants include FANUC, Yaskawa Electric Corporation, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., Kubota Corporation, Mitsui & Co., Mitsubishi Corporation, NEC Corporation, SoftBank, and Sony Group Corporation. The stated objective is to develop shared infrastructure, including world models, data infrastructure and evaluation methods.
The Coalition comprises companies with field data and machinery, companies responsible for data and AI, companies engaged in business development, trading companies responsible for overseas expansion, and independent startups. Each company takes on a different role, together forming an entire industrial supply chain.
NVIDIA aims to establish what would effectively become the de facto standard for physical AI development centered on Cosmos, while providing an open platform built around Cosmos3. It is also building a stack that integrates the use of field data, digital twins, simulation and edge deployment.
Using Japanese companies' field data and machinery technologies could shorten development timelines, reduce data collection costs and create opportunities to convert existing equipment into AI services. At the same time, the scope of data sharing, intellectual property design and the allocation of responsibility for safety have been identified as challenges for future rule-making and governance.
