BOJ Policy Board Member Takada Hajime (高田創) is said to have suggested the possibility of consecutive rate hikes. Against the backdrop of overseas developments and expanding AI demand, he is said to have pointed out that a shift in conditions is necessary.
BOJ Policy Board Member Takada Hajime (高田創) is said to have expressed the view at a press conference following a financial and economic forum in Sapporo that monetary policy operations will enter a new phase in which the BOJ raises rates flexibly, without being bound to a fixed pace.
He reportedly noted that major overseas central banks were in a rate-cutting phase in 2024-25, and referred to the possibility of a phase in which the BOJ instead raises rates. He also reportedly pointed out that central banks in various countries had begun moving to contain inflation in response to expanding fiscal spending and AI investment.
The BOJ’s next policy meeting will be held on 17-18 September, and the market-estimated probability of a September rate hike has been reported to be high. The BOJ raised its policy rate to 1% in June, and an acceleration in the pace of rate hikes is reportedly attracting attention.
