The Ukrainian government has asked the Japanese government to arrange talks between President Zelenskyy (ゼレンスキー) and Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae (高市早苗) to coincide with this month’s United Nations General Assembly in New York, according to a Ukrainian official. The purpose is said to be advancing cooperation in drone-system technology as the two countries develop systems to counter Russia. Japan is said to have replied that it was considering the talks.
If formal talks take place, they could be the first meeting since Takaichi Sanae (高市早苗) became prime minister in October 2025. Takaichi Sanae (高市早苗) is scheduled to visit New York from the 21st to the 24th this month and may have opportunities for separate talks with U.S. President Donald Trump (トランプ) and others, but it remains unclear whether the meeting will take place because of scheduling constraints.
The Ukrainian government has called for defense cooperation, potentially including agreements on the provision of scarce interceptor missiles by Japan and the joint development of interceptor drones. As Russia’s invasion continues, strengthening air defenses toward the winter has become a challenge.
The move is seen as intended to further advance defense cooperation between Japan and Ukraine centered on drone technology. Attention is focused on whether the two sides will reach a formal agreement and on the progress of future negotiations.
