Construction of a new plant at Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor facility in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, one of the three major mega-projects being promoted by the South Korean government, is nearing commencement. Samsung is expected to invest approximately KRW 6 trillion in expanding the Onyang Campus, with construction set to begin as early as next month.
South Chungcheong Province reviewed and approved the expansion project for Samsung Electronics’ Onyang Campus in Asan, recognizing that its scale exceeds the threshold for development activities. Covering approximately 389,825 square meters in total, the project involves building a new plant with an investment of KRW 6 trillion to expand production of high-performance AI semiconductors, including HBM.
The government plans to invest KRW 392 trillion in the Chungcheong region, including KRW 202 trillion in South Chungcheong Province. The review process was brought forward by more than one month compared with the previous schedule, and Samsung Electronics plans to begin construction as early as next month.
Asan City established the Samsung Investment Administrative Support Promotion Group to facilitate the investment and accelerated procedures, including by shortening the consultation period for disaster impact assessments. The city aims to speed up related public procedures and prevent potential causes of construction delays in advance.
Once the Onyang Campus expansion becomes operational, it is expected to create approximately 700 direct jobs. Approximately 3,400 workers per day are expected to be involved during the construction period, generating an estimated economic spillover effect of approximately KRW 2.6 trillion. Urban development in surrounding areas, including the development of a new-city-scale residential district, is also expected to accelerate.
