SK hynix President Kwak said that the supply shortage of memory semiconductors caused by the spread of AI is expected to continue through the end of 2030, and also referred to the possibility of additional investment in the United States. He said, however, that no specific potential investment site has been decided at present.
He took an optimistic view of the market outlook after 2030, pointing out that the next downturn may not be the same as those in the past. Unlike in the past, when demand was difficult to forecast, he explained that AI-related memory, including HBM, is evolving into a customized model jointly developed with customers.
In light of the growing adoption of HBM, he said that closer cooperation with customers is necessary to maximize system performance, and that demand can be identified earlier than before. He indicated that demand is more likely to slow or stagnate than to decline sharply going forward.
Regarding potential sites for additional investment in the United States, he reiterated that there is no shortlist at present and emphasized that an environment capable of providing resources such as water, electricity, human resources and subsidies is an important condition for deciding where to invest.
