SBI Securities is scheduled to extend its US stock trading hours to 23 hours, allowing trading from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. the following morning during winter time and from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. the following morning during daylight saving time in Japan. Trading will be divided into 4 sessions, with the launch scheduled for 7 December 2026.
Until now, trading US stocks through SBI Securities has centred on the regular market, with most trading taking place during the late-night hours in Japan. To coincide with the start of 23-hour trading on the US Nasdaq market, SBI Securities is expected to significantly extend its US stock trading hours, from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. the following morning during winter time and from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. the following morning during daylight saving time.
After the extension, winter trading hours in Japan will total 23 hours: the overnight session from 11:00 to 18:00, the pre-market session from 18:00 to 23:30, the regular market from 23:30 to 6:00 the following morning, and the after-market session from 6:00 to 10:00. This will be approximately 3.5 times longer than the current hours.
Two-way linkages between Japanese and US equities are expected to strengthen. There are likely to be more instances in which movements in the US market after Japanese earnings announcements spill over into Japanese equities. The view is that overnight news will be more readily reflected in share prices the following day.
By investment style, the service could be used across a broad range of approaches, including day trading, swing trading, long-term investing and Japan-US pairs trading. The increased flexibility of the strategy is explained in terms of choosing whether to include or exclude after-hours trading.
