The classic “Empress,” which began serialization in 1996, has been remade in a contemporary full-color style using generative AI and is available exclusively on the Manga Kingdom comic platform. A member of the Beaglee Inc. editorial team discussed the project’s origins and the care taken in its production.
A remake of the long-loved classic “Empress,” reconstructed in a contemporary style using AI and converted to full color, is being distributed exclusively on Manga Kingdom, with production handled by Beaglee Inc. The project forms part of the seventh classic-remake initiative, and the AI-based visual techniques and production process have been introduced. The original story is by Kurashina Ryo (倉科遼), with art by Wake Issaku (和気一作), and the series has sold more than 2.5 million copies since serialization began.
The project began with the idea of using generative AI to improve the matching of readers with works. After remaking 6 titles, the team refined its technology with the aim of generating reader response and helping audiences rediscover the works. Because “Empress” contains many motifs drawn from the real world, it was judged that re-expressing them with AI could produce an effective result while preserving a sense of realism.
The original author, Kurashina Ryo (倉科遼), initially responded uncertainly to the AI remake. However, taking into account his long-standing relationship with the team and its record of developing other works, he readily agreed to take on the challenge. After reading the completed version, Kurashina recognized its appeal, which differs from the traditional gekiga style, and expressed his appreciation for the team’s flexibility.
