SHOEI's Z-9 is a comprehensive redesign of the previous Z-8. Performance has been enhanced, particularly in aerodynamics and ventilation, and although the weight has increased slightly, cooling and quietness have improved. Prices start at ¥71,500, including size diagnosis and interior adjustment services.
SHOEI's Z-9 sport full-face helmet for road use is a comprehensive redesign of the previous Z-8, with further improvements to aerodynamic performance and ventilation. The shell has been redesigned, reducing lift by approximately 13% and drag by approximately 3%. Top-ventilation airflow is said to be up to approximately 1.9 times that of the Z-8. Wind noise at 100km/h is reduced, with greater noise suppression particularly in the lower frequency range. In terms of design, the air duct above the forehead has been moved to the center, while the side cut lines have been minimized to maintain strength.
Measured weight is 1496g with the anti-fog sheet fitted (L size, Matte Slate Gray), and 1505g with the Chin Curtain included. The previous Z-8 weighs 1428g. Although the Z-9 is 68g heavier, its redesigned interior and improved hold provide a lighter, more integrated feel when worn.
Ventilation and quietness are said to surpass those of the Z-8. At 100km/h, the Z-9 feels cooler, and although the mouth-area duct is effective, the perceived difference in airflow is considered limited to an illusory effect. Fitting the included Chin Curtain substantially improves quietness and its ability to block wind from entering.
Overall, the Z-9 is considered to deliver a high level of basic performance in lightness, aerodynamics, quietness and ventilation, making it suitable for a wide range of uses from urban riding and touring to sporty riding. It costs ¥8,800 more than the Z-8, but is considered good value when the included interior adjustment service is taken into account.
