Sakata Seed Corporation has created packages featuring the winning designs from its Seed Packet Design Contest and plans to sell related products for a limited time in spring 2027 to commemorate GREEN×EXPO 2027.
Sakata Seed Corporation has unveiled packages featuring the 2 grand-prize-winning designs from its Seed Packet Design Contest. The contest was held from June to September 2025 and was open to students at universities, vocational schools and high schools in Kanagawa Prefecture. The seeds to be sold are the mini tomato “Carol Passion” and Hana Enogu Tane Dango Mix (spring sowing), which are scheduled to be sold as limited products for spring 2027 through the company’s mail-order service, including its online shop. Orders will be accepted from mid-November 2026, and shipments are expected to begin sequentially in late December of the same year. Carol Passion will contain approximately 12 seeds per packet and cost ¥495 per packet, including tax, while Hana Enogu Tane Dango Mix will contain approximately 10g per packet and cost ¥550 per packet, including tax.
2 designs were selected for the grand prize. One depicts tomatoes growing abundantly and children watering them nearby, while the other depicts a person holding a seed ball and a landscape filled with blooming flowers. Both designs were praised for expressing the enjoyment of growing plants from seeds and the everyday relationship between people and plants.
3 designs were selected for the excellence prize: 2 featuring sunflowers and 1 featuring okra. The sunflower designs feature Vincent (Type 2) Orange, while the okra design features Zutto Midori.
Interviews with the winners have also been published on a dedicated website, introducing the thoughts behind their designs and the creative approaches they used in producing them.
