According to daily reports, the yield on the new 5-year government bond in the domestic bond market on the afternoon of the 2nd stood at 2.235%, up 0.015 percentage points from the previous Friday. The morning closing yield was flat at 2.220%. Bond prices continued to trend lower, while the yield on the 10-year government bond, a guide to long-term interest rates, rose 0.025 percentage points from the previous Friday to 2.780%.
In the Tokyo equity market during the same period, the Nikkei 225 rose, prompting speculation that investors' excessive risk aversion was easing. One explanation was that this had allowed selling of domestic bonds, viewed as low-risk assets, to continue.
The simultaneous rise in bond-market yields and movement in the equity market is attracting attention as a factor that could affect short- and medium-term interest-rate levels in the financial markets.
