Advantest shares rose sharply in morning trading, driven by Micron Technology’s results, which again highlighted the strength of demand for AI semiconductors. Buying spread to domestic semiconductor-related stocks.
Advantest, a major semiconductor testing equipment manufacturer, extended its gains sharply on the Tokyo market after Micron Technology’s results exceeded market expectations. The shares rose as much as ¥2,300 from the previous day to ¥36,560 during morning trading.
Micron released its results after the close of the US market on 30 September. Revenue and adjusted earnings per share both exceeded expectations, while its revenue outlook for the September–November quarter also came in above consensus. The strength of demand for AI semiconductors again came into focus. Advantest led buying as a leading beneficiary of demand for testing advanced AI semiconductors. Selling related to the Nikkei Average’s cap adjustment had also run its course.
The rise in semiconductor-related stocks spread to other names, including Tokyo Electron, Disco and Lasertec. Micron’s results were reported to have been boosted by a sharp increase in HBM demand, prompting views that continued expansion in data-center investment would also support demand for testing and manufacturing equipment from Japanese companies.
Market participants are focused on clues regarding the sustainability of AI investment, and some expect short-term risk appetite for semiconductor-related stocks to increase. Advantest shares appear likely to retest their recent highs, but upcoming earnings announcements and additional information on demand will be the focus.
