Bose has acquired Australia's Firelight Technologies, drawing attention to the future development structure for FMOD, the sound middleware for games. The acquisition terms are undisclosed, and continued support has been indicated.
Bose announced that it had acquired Firelight Technologies on 1 October 2026. Development and support for FMOD will continue after the acquisition, and existing developer support is also expected to be maintained. The transaction amount and terms have not been disclosed.
FMOD is third-party middleware that enhances sound functionality in game development. It consists of FMOD Studio and FMOD Engine and supports integration with Unity and Unreal Engine, among others. It has also been used in several Japanese indie games.
In terms of licensing, the current game licensing model is presented as a fixed-fee structure, with free or fixed-price licenses set according to the development budget. Changes to licensing fees or terms after the acquisition have not been announced, but developments are expected to attract attention.
The industry and community are discussing whether FMOD's ongoing support and open approach to collaboration will be maintained. Comparing it with the example of Wwise, which has already been acquired by SIE, observers have pointed out that the impact could depend on FMOD's adoption and any changes to its licensing.
