Canadian autoworkers' union Unifor approved a new labor agreement with GM, and GM announced plans to invest a total of CAD 1.1 billion in its Canadian operations. The agreement covers the investments and future production plans for the Oshawa and St. Catharines plants, as well as the treatment of CAMI while production remains halted.
Canadian autoworkers' union Unifor announced on 30 August that it had approved a new labor agreement covering GM's 4 plants in Ontario. GM has accordingly announced plans to invest a total of CAD 1.1 billion in its Canadian operations.
GM presented plans to make additional investments of CAD 144 million in the Oshawa plant and CAD 215 million in the St. Catharines plant, beginning production of the next-generation GMC Sierra Heavy Duty and next-generation transmissions by the second half of 2029.
Meanwhile, production remains halted at the CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, but GM plans not to sell or close the plant during the term of the labor agreement. Unifor said it would continue pressing for production to resume.
It was also reported that Stellantis indicated its intention to discuss the possibility of selling its Brampton plant in Ontario with other companies. The impact of U.S. tariff measures has been cited as a factor. The next developments will be closely watched.
