Sumitomo Mitsui Card and Odakyu Bus announced that they will expand credit card payments to all regular-route buses and aim to make operations fully cashless by fiscal 2029.
Sumitomo Mitsui Card announced plans to expand its credit card boarding service for regular-route buses in collaboration with Odakyu Bus. The companies intend to gradually increase the number of covered vehicles and establish payment methods other than cash, with the aim of improving the convenience of cashless payments for passengers.
The ultimate goal is to equip all vehicles with credit card boarding functionality by fiscal 2029, thereby making regular-route bus services cashless. The specific rollout pace and draft plan will be subject to a formal announcement at a later date.
This initiative is positioned as part of the effort to reduce reliance on cash, similar to the wider adoption of card payments on railways. As credit card boarding becomes more widespread on public transportation, convenience is expected to improve and payment options to diversify.
