A groundbreaking ceremony for an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) plant approved by the Indian Semiconductor Mission (ISM) was held on 1 August in Tallurubada, Vizag, Andhra Pradesh. It will be the first OSAT plant in the state.
The plant will handle semiconductor packaging and testing, and will produce chips for mobile phones, automotive electronic control units (ECUs) and consumer electronics in partnership with South Korea's APACT. Annual production capacity is expected to reach approximately 96 million units.
Initial investment is expected to exceed ¥4.6 billion, with facility expansion to be carried out through additional investment of more than ¥20 billion. Andhra Pradesh is stepping up efforts to attract investment from South Korean companies and continues to promote investment, including through a visit to Seoul by the state's minister for information technology and human resources development.
The OSAT plant is positioned as part of a large-scale investment program under way in the Tallurubada area. It has also been noted that Google has a data center in the district. Attention is focused on whether Andhra Pradesh's industrial policy will turn Vizag into a major industrial hub.
