Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced plans to develop a new shipbuilding base on an artificial island in Shimonoseki, with total investment of approximately ¥100 billion and expected government support of up to ¥40 billion.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has announced plans to acquire industrial development land at Choshu Dejima and invest approximately ¥100 billion to expand the shipbuilding capacity of its Shimonoseki Shipyard. The site covers approximately 145,000 square meters and will be acquired for approximately ¥3 billion.
The new plant will assume some of the functions of the Eura Plant, and a new plant will be built to manufacture hull blocks. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with operations targeted to start in 2030.
The plan is driven by rising global demand for maritime transportation and economic security requirements, with the investment backed by the government. The government has designated hulls as specified critical goods and expects to provide a subsidy of up to ¥40 billion out of the approximately ¥100 billion total investment.
The investment is intended to maintain and strengthen Japan's domestic shipbuilding base and establish a stable supply system for vessels, with the aim of enhancing the competitiveness of the domestic shipbuilding industry.
