Sophia University and UC Berkeley jointly developed a 4-day intensive program. Participants from different industries learn the mindsets needed to create new businesses and how to drive organizational transformation. In fiscal 2025, 58 people from 28 companies participated. On the final day, they prepare and deliver presentations for company executives, helping embed the lessons within their organizations.
Three barriers to innovation at Japanese companies have been identified: the misconception that technological innovation should be given excessive priority, insufficient exploration of customer needs, and a shortage of people capable of evaluating proposals. Against this backdrop, Sophia University and UC Berkeley Executive Education offer a short-term intensive program, Innovation Boot Camp (IBC), with a curriculum designed to teach Silicon Valley-style thinking and approaches to organizational transformation in a structured 4-day format.
IBC goes beyond teaching advanced technologies such as AI applications and ecosystem building. Its distinguishing feature is that it also covers practical know-how, including analysis of individuals’ adaptability and methods for persuading and engaging different internal stakeholders. Led by renowned professors visiting Japan, the program combines energetic classroom facilitation with participants’ diverse backgrounds to generate productive interaction, while giving participants an opportunity to gain perspective on their own habitual ways of thinking.
After the 4 days of lectures, the final day is devoted to preparing and delivering presentations for company executives, enabling participants to take what they have learned back to their organizations in a form that can be proposed internally without delay. Sophia University provides follow-up through its alumni association, encouraging collaboration among participants and the creation of new business opportunities. Tailor-made training programs can also be designed for individual companies, and concrete discussions are reportedly under way with several companies.
