In the Tokyo market on the 1st, dollar/yen was firm, while US interest rates rose following a substantial upward revision to the final reading of the previous day's US gross domestic product (GDP). This prompted dollar buying and drove the yen lower. Expectations for monetary tightening by the Bank of Japan are still considered to be priced in to some extent, and pressure for yen weakness remained to a certain degree.
There were periods in the afternoon when the gains paused, but dollar/yen rose to ¥158.45 in the evening. Euro/yen rose from ¥178.31 to ¥179.31, while euro/dollar fell from 1.1336 to 1.1292.
As of 17:00, dollar/yen was trading in the ¥158.20-30 range and euro/yen in the ¥179.00-10 range. The Nikkei 225 ended trading at ¥68,956.72, after opening at ¥67,106.52, up ¥2,203.00 from the previous day.
