NVIDIA's agreement to acquire Hugging Face for approximately $12.9 billion has drawn attention to concerns that the open platform could be enclosed and to the impact on its multicloud strategy. The companies have indicated that Hugging Face will continue to work with a diverse range of cloud providers and hardware after the acquisition.
NVIDIA agreed on 3 September 2026 to acquire Hugging Face, which operates a platform for the open-model developer community, for $12.9303 billion. By integrating the two companies, NVIDIA aims to scale up the platform, strengthen infrastructure and expand access to AI.
Over the past 10 years, Hugging Face has grown into an open-model community with more than 18 million developers and researchers participating. More than 200,000 companies use the platform to explore, evaluate and deploy AI.
NVIDIA said that after the acquisition it will support multicloud and multi-accelerator environments without making hardware or cloud services from other providers mandatory. Users will continue to be able to choose the models and frameworks they use, as well as their inference services, as they have in the past.
The companies will continue supporting open-weight models while working to improve reliability, safety and inference capabilities. Hugging Face's brand is expected to be retained after the acquisition, and the companies said they intend to preserve openness while maintaining the open ecosystem.
