At the opening of the Tokyo stock market on the morning of the 28th, the Nikkei 225 extended its gains, at one point moving above 67,000. AI and semiconductor-related stocks were bought against a backdrop of gains in US technology stocks.
The Nikkei 225 opened higher at the opening of the Tokyo stock market on the morning of the 28th. It was approximately ¥600 higher than at the previous weekend’s close, at one point moving above 67,000 for the first time in roughly a month and a half, since 18 August. Against a backdrop of gains in major US market indexes and following the performance of US technology stocks, buying of AI- and semiconductor-related stocks was prominent in Japan as well.
In the US market, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rebounded for the first time in 4 sessions, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.48%. Microsoft’s announcement of updates to its AI support features drove the market, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index finished 1.41% higher. In Tokyo, buying centered on AI- and semiconductor-related stocks such as Advantest and SoftBank Group.
The 28th was the last day to trade with rights attached for interim dividends and shareholder benefits for companies whose fiscal year ends in March. Buying by individual investors seeking to secure rights to high-dividend-yield stocks supported the market. TOPIX is also extending its gains.
By individual stock, Tokyo Electron, TDK and SCREEN Holdings traded relatively firmly, while Recruit Holdings and Murata Manufacturing also rose. Fast Retailing, Ibiden, Chugai Pharmaceutical, Daiichi Sankyo and KDDI declined.
