As a new step toward reducing reliance on fishmeal, FEED ONE CO.,LTD. is advancing the development and testing of Kamui ZERO, a formulated eel feed, with a view to bringing it into commercial use. The product is scheduled to launch in 2026, and results from in-house and field testing have been reported.
FEED ONE CO.,LTD. has announced the development of Kamui ZERO, a fishmeal-free feed intended to reduce reliance on fishmeal in formulated eel feed. The company has begun field testing in cooperation with local eel farmers and is evaluating the feed’s effectiveness and challenges under actual aquaculture conditions.
As part of its efforts to date, Unamaru, which reduced the fishmeal content to 60%, was commercialized in 2016, followed by Ethical, which reduced the content to 40%, in 2023. Research is now continuing toward the commercial use of fishmeal-free feed.
In-house testing was conducted from August to October 2026. A comparison of Ethical, which contains 40% fishmeal, with conventional feed found that the daily feeding rate was at least equivalent, while feed efficiency showed a tendency to fall below that of the conventional product. Field testing was conducted over 2 months at eel farms in Kyushu and covered approximately 38,000 eels. The growth multiple for the fishmeal-free feed was approximately 2x in both groups, and feeding was confirmed.
The company aims to launch the product in 2026 and plans to improve its performance and expand adoption through field testing. It will continue verifying the ingredient composition, formulation design and manufacturing conditions toward the commercial use of fishmeal-free feed. The product has also been featured on a television program and is attracting attention as part of sustainable aquaculture.
