FamilyMart has announced its new “Famima Coordinate” uniform and outlined a policy of expanding the choices available for hair color and clothing. Meanwhile, workplace attitudes toward tattoos have drawn mixed reactions in the United States, with grooming standards evolving differently from country to country.
According to a survey by overseas media, stereotypes toward people with tattoos remain in workplace perceptions, and job applicants with tattoos tend to have more difficulty being hired. However, tattoos are sometimes viewed as an expression of individuality among entrepreneurs and in creative industries.
In Japan, attitudes toward workplace grooming are gradually changing. While acceptance of nail polish, beards and hair color is growing, individual companies continue to have their own rules. FamilyMart has introduced Famima Coordinate as its new uniform and adopted a policy of respecting employees’ individuality.
The new uniform replaces the conventional blouson-style design with a T-shirt-style design based on an outer T-shirt. It is made from heavyweight 100% cotton that is less transparent and has been treated for antibacterial and odor-control properties. The company says the aim is to prioritize ease of movement and a casual look while expanding the choices available for hair color and clothing.
By introducing the new “Famima Coordinate” standards, FamilyMart has indicated that it will respect staff members’ autonomy and individuality while retaining conventional standards of conduct, including a clean appearance, hygiene management, safety and good customer service, as the foundation.
