Kyushu Railway Company used generative AI to develop in-house a vehicle data visualization app and a work-shift auto-generation app with employees who were not engineers. Development was completed in approximately 2–3 months.
Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) created an environment in which employees with no engineering experience could develop business applications in-house by using the generative AI features of the groupware platform “Google Workspace with Gemini.” The company completed a vehicle data visualization app and a work-shift auto-generation app in approximately 2–3 months. Google Cloud Japan announced these results in a blog post.
The PoC began in September 2025 with the participation of approximately 30 employees from field departments and subsequently moved into production use with approximately 400 accounts. The work proceeded by having Gemini generate most of the code, conveying requirements in natural language, and then verifying and improving the output code.
The first app is a web application that analyzes and visualizes data from vehicles in revenue service in real time. Previously, inspection intervals were limited, and the use of accumulated data was also restricted. The second app automatically generates employee work shifts, creating optimized schedules that take night shifts, work on holidays, individual skills and workloads into account. These applications were built using Streamlit.
Gemini is also being used to create web pages, including automatically generating rough drafts of landing pages, and efforts to bring work performed by field departments in-house are expanding.
