The Nikkei Stock Average closed at ¥69,856.72, up ¥2,203.00 from the previous day, recovering to a level not seen for approximately 1.5 months. Buying spread across AI- and semiconductor-related stocks following strong earnings from US-based Micron Technology.
The Nikkei Stock Average extended its sharp advance in the Tokyo stock market, closing at ¥69,856.72, up ¥2,203.00 from the previous day, not ¥223. The close was above ¥68,000 for the first time in approximately 1.5 months.
US semiconductor giant Micron Technology reported revenue of $54.2 billion for the June-August 2026 quarter, a substantial increase of approximately 4.8 times year on year. Expectations rose for continued strength in earnings and sustained demand for AI and data centers.
Against this backdrop, the Nikkei widened its gains after trading began, opening ¥352.80 above the previous day's close. Buying then spread, particularly across semiconductor-related stocks, helping to lift the broader market.
Market participants said buying was evident in anticipation of sustained demand from AI and data centers, and reports also suggested that funds flowed into sectors including semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
