At the afternoon session open on the 5th, gains in the Nikkei paused in the Tokyo market. As a risk-on stance continued against the backdrop of reduced expectations for an early additional rate hike by the Federal Reserve, basket trades in several stocks were executed on the TSE on the 5th.
At the afternoon session open on the 5th, the Nikkei was up only slightly after a sharp rise from the previous weekend, trading in the ¥69,800 range. The backdrop was a decline in expectations for an early additional rate hike by the Federal Reserve following the U.S. employment report. Risk-taking increased during the day, with buying focused on high-priced stocks, and the index briefly moved above ¥70,000 in the morning session, but profit-taking selling appears to have emerged at higher levels.
Approximately ¥25.4 billion in off-auction basket trades were executed on the TSE after the morning session close.
As of 12:45 p.m., trading value on the TSE Prime Market was approximately ¥418.39 billion, while trading volume was 1.10535 billion shares.
By stock, Tokyo Electron, Advantest and Fast Retailing rose, while Fujikura, Recruit and Daikin declined.
